Solar da Pena: a historic wine estate near Braga

Just minutes from central Braga, on the banks of the Cávado River, Solar da Pena brings together history, nature and wine tourism. Its façade bears the coats of arms of Afonso IV of Portugal and Afonso XI of Castile, and the estate dates back to the 14th century, beside the ancient Roman road of Geira.

Vineyards and biodiversity

The estate’s 30 hectares include Portuguese grape varieties such as Loureiro, Arinto, Avesso, Padeiro de Basto, Espadeiro and Vinhão, alongside Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The landscape is also home to a rare Seiva-Barriguda tree and diverse wildlife, including birds, owls, foxes, hares and sheep.

Wine tourism experiences

Visitors can take a guided tour, learn about the winemaking process and enjoy Vinho Verde tastings paired with regional cheeses and cured meats. Picnics among the vineyards offer another way to take in the landscape, with a basket of local produce.

Guests can also explore the vineyards on an electric-bike route of around 10 km, followed by a tasting of Solar da Pena wines.

A partnership to discover the Minho

Solar da Pena also hosts showcooking events and wine lunches and dinners with chef Paulo Jorge. Through its partnership with Invite Portugal, visitors can combine these experiences with a transfer and discover the Minho’s heritage, scenery and flavours in comfort.
